ALEXANDER WANG SUCCEEDS GHESQUIERE

Alexander Wang, source slamxhype

After weeks of speculation about who will replace Nicolas Ghesquière as Creative Director at the house of Balenciaga it seems like the waiting game is finally over. Early this morning WWD has leaked that Alexander Wang is the unusual choice for the new director of the established fashion house, succeeding Ghesquière who officially left yesterday after 15 years of collaboration with the label. Balenciaga is yet to make a formal announcement of the appointment in the next week.

What will this mean for the House of Balenciaga? Will Wang cause a rupture? I wouldn’t say so. If anything, Balenciaga has finally found a designer that aligns with their own rebellious, unconventional aesthetic. Since Ghesquière took control over the flailing label in 1997, he has modernised the label over his reign into a one of the top couture houses in the world, continuing the sculptural aesthetic that characterised the label since its foundation in 1937. Though, the appointment might just mean that the couture house wants to tone down the elitist image Ghesquière created and appeal to the masses through  Wang's sporty, modern aesthetic. Hopefully the 29-year old Wang will continue the dimension of couture that is so distinctive of the house while bringing in his own youthful energy that he has showcased since the launch of his own womenswear label in 2008 and not let the established house fall victim to mass manufacturing and trends. It just looks like Wang will be able to fill those plastic lego shoes after all. Let the Wang reign supreme!

  2. I don't know that Alexander Wang is really going to make the brand seem less elitist, but I don't think he will change the brand for the worse in any way - just a different direction!
